The Adventure Bride’s Guide to Choosing Elopement Flowers

Hey Adventure Brides! Welcome back for another ted talk with your favorite elopement photographer ;)

This week’s post is all about adventure elopement florals! Keep reading to see my most frequently asked questions when it comes to adventure weddings & bouquets!

While planning your adventure elopement with the love of your life and your trusty elopement photographer is SO much fun and gives you so much to look forward to, there is still a good amount of anxiety and stress. Especially, it seems, when it comes to florals.

Questions like “Should I even have a bouquet?” or “What type of bouquet should I have?” or “How do I choose the colors for my flowers?” or “Are flowers even allowed at my elopement location?” Out of all of the adventure elopement consultation calls I’ve been on, these are the main questions and concerns I get regarding florals.

First of all, YOU ARE NOT ALONE! It’s totally normal to have anxiety and swirling fears/questions surrounding your event. But take some time to take a deep breath. Your elopement will be 100% yours, and it will be perfect - even if it is imperfect!

Let me do what I do best as your go-to adventure elopement photographer and put your mind at ease! Here are the top questions regarding florals that I encounter on consultation calls with real adventure brides like you, with real worries, just like you!

  1. “Should I even worry about a bouquet?”

My answer is always the same to this question: that depends! When you imagine your adventure wedding day, or picture your elopement photos in hand, how do you see yourself? Are you holding a bouquet?

Every bride values different aspects of their wedding day, and if you are someone who really loves the idea of having a little added decor on your day (even if it is on the side of a mountain), then DO IT!

If you feel like a bouquet just “isn’t you” and you would rather forego the florals, then by all means. DO IT. But, please don’t let the idea of “it’ll be one more thing to carry” hold you back from your dream wedding bouquet. There are different ways to carry your flowers so that they are still nice and pretty once you reach your jaw-dropping adventure elopement destination! (I will deal with this in a future post!)

2. “What type of bouquet should I have?”

Once again, that depends! Are you a “go big or go home” type of person, or are you a “less is more” type of person? Is a small bouquet for just a touch of color enough to suit your needs, or do you want to absolutely steal the show with your amazing arrangement? All these questions are entirely up to your personal preference, and there is NO wrong answer!

In a future blog post, I’ll cover the different shapes of bouquets possible, but for now choosing a size/shape that really speaks to you is the most important thing. Pinterest is a very helpful resource, especially for brides who have trouble envisioning their potential desired arrangement!

3. “How do I choose the colors for my flowers?”

Well, I’m so glad you asked! If there’s one thing this adventure photographer loves talking about, it’s COLOR! For me, the brighter, the better! I don’t think I’ve ever met a color I’d consider ugly.

Some brides have imagined and planned their wedding colors since they were little girls (come on, be honest…every little girl has had a go-to color scheme since they were old enough to know what a wedding was)! And if that’s you, then that’s GREAT! Less work for you!

If that’s NOT you, that’s OK! Some of us (myself included) are a bit more indecisive about these things!

For those who are unsure about the colors used for their wedding, my first question is always “What season will your adventure wedding be held in?” Many times, certain color pallets can be excluded based off of the season. For example, you may be very attracted to fall colors, but decide against using that particular combination of colors if your wedding is being held in a snowy and wintery location. If there is a seasonal color pallet that is aesthetically pleasing to you, this is an easy fix!

For those who do NOT want their colors tied to the seasons, I encourage my adventure brides to consider their location. What color will “pop” nicely against your landscape? For example, in a desert setting, multicolored succulents would stand out in a colorful way, AND be appropriate for the setting.

4. “Are flowers even allowed at my elopement location?”

This is a common problem that many adventure brides face! Especially if you are getting married in a national park, there can be many rules and regulations regarding what is allowed on the land and what isn’t in order to protect their native species growing there as well as the wildlife feeding there.

I often recommend artificial florals to my adventure couples, for a list of reasons (this will be dealt with in another blog post!), but mostly for the one I just listed above.

Hiring an elopement photographer who is familiar with your desired location OR who is an excellent detective is a must! This is where I (or whatever other amazing human you’ve hired to capture your wedding memories) come in! Your photographer can really help you by doing the needed research on the regulations and policies of your chosen location, and helping you plan accordingly!

In Conclusion:

At Dye the Knot Adventure Weddings & Elopements, part of my job that most adventure brides hire me for includes arranging their durable and aesthetically pleasing florals for their day! When you hire me, not only do you get a great cheerleader, photographer, and planner; you also get your own personal florist! (This is my shameless plug for myself!) I’d LOVE to be your adventure buddy!

That’s all I’ve got for now! I will be circling back over the next month and publishing additional posts on bouquet shapes, how to safely transport your adventure bouquet, and reasons to use artificial flowers for your adventure elopement.

For those returning, thanks so much for reading! For my new adventure brides, I hope I was able to give you some good and actionable advice for your day!

Till next time!
