The Adventure Bride’s Guide to Planning an Adventure Elopement at Fort Pickens National Park

Fort Pickens National Park is definitely a popular wedding, engagement, and vow renewal location choice for those looking to host their event in the Florida panhandle. And why not? It’s got some beautiful brick ruins, an amazing overlook that showcases the many emerald shades of the Gulf of Mexico and the sunrise/sunset, grassy slopes, cannons, and gorgeous Emerald Coast beach access!

While hosting an adventure elopement here will give you a wide range of photo opportunities, there are a few insider tips to be aware of before embarking on your wedding adventure!

  1. Footwear & Leg Coverings

Fort Pickens has several grassy areas that make for some great photo backgrounds…but there are tons of spiny little cactuses in the ground that may just make some tears run down your leg (if you know what I mean…) should you step on one! The first time I visited the fort, I was assisting another photographer who forgot to warn me…I was pulling spines out of my flip flops and my skin and boy DID IT HURT!

I also made the mistake of wearing shorts the first time I visited the fort. Sure, it’s Florida and close to the beach so it is warm, but those cactuses will make you regret every moment if you plan to explore the grassy areas rather than stick to the concrete public areas.

2. Photo Permits

That’s right! Unfortunately, at Fort Pickens, now that it has become a national historical park, all photographers must apply for a photo permit in order to shoot there. Applications can be filled out online through the park’s website, and usually take around 2 weeks to process. If you’re caught shooting without one, first of all that would be embarrassing, and second of all, you will probably end up with a nice little fine for breaking the rule! Good to know before you go!

3. Sunscreen/Eye Protection

It’s important to note that Fort Pickens has many areas that are quite bright. If your event is taking place during a hot portion of the day, bringing sunglasses for between photos is a good idea. Water, a hand-held fan, sunscreen under your makeup…all of these measures can help prevent experiencing negative effects from the hot sun rays.

4. Wedding Dress Considerations

There are many uphill portions of the fort to get to the beautiful sunset overlook that will give you a sweeping beach-meets-sky photo background. There are also a few different staircases at the fort itself. Choosing a full skirt or perhaps one with a slit may be helpful when climbing these areas.

Having an adventure elopement or vow renewal at Fort Pickens National Historical Park is a great choice! I hope these tips help as you plan your event!
